Board of Directors

The mission of Show Me KC Schools: To empower families on their educational journey by providing vital information about their school options, inspiring school pride, and increasing access to free public education across the KC Metro area. The vision of Show Me KC Schools: That all systems work for Kansas City families and community members have confidence in their school options.

Position

The Board supports the work of Show Me MO Schools and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance to ensure all students and families receive information on school options in the KCMO district boundaries and beyond. While day-to-day operations are led by our Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, Governance, and Oversight

*Serving as a leader, partner and trusted advisor in the development and implementation of Show Me MO strategic plan 

*Reviewing outcomes and metrics for evaluating the impact of SMKCS programs and regularly measuring their performance and effectiveness.

*Approving SMKCS annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities 

*Contributing to selecting, supporting, and evaluating the Executive Director 

*Assisting the Executive Director and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members 

* Partnering with the Executive Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out 

*Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments

*Representing SMKCS to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization 

*Ensuring SMKCS commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities SMKCS serves

Fundraising

* Show Me KC Schools Board Members will consider SMKCS a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that, and that are meaningful to their household. This may include the gift of time. So that SMKCS can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, SMKCS expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity

As an organization ambassador, in partnership with the Executive director, cultivate relationships thatare beneficial to the organization’s revenue strategies

Board Terms/Participation

  1. SMKCS Board members serve a two-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms, for a total of three consecutive terms

  2. Board meetings are typically held bimonthly/quarterly

  3. Directors are expected to attend and fully participate in all meetings. While occasional absences occur, directors are expected to notify the Board Chair/Executive Director of expected absences, and attend a minimum of 75% of all regularly scheduled meetings

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for individuals who are passionate about SMKCS mission. We seek community-engaged leaders across multiple sectors including business, government, community organizations, philanthropy, and/or the nonprofit sector. Due to the nature of our organization, those who work in the education space in Kansas City bring unique knowledge and experiences. These individuals must be sector agnostic in decision making. The candidate must have volunteered with SMKCS before joining the board.

Ideal Candidates will have the following Qualifications:

● Professional experience with deep leadership in business, government, philanthropy, community service, and the nonprofit sector

● A commitment to and understanding of SMKCS mission and of the impact we have on the city.

● Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

● Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of students in KC.

● Must live and or work in the Kansas City Missouri School District boundary.

Service on SMKCS Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Member’s duties.
