Summary: Metropolitan Energy Center (MEC) is seeking board members with a strong fundraising background. The Board supports the work of MEC and provides mission-based and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by MEC's Executive Director, the Board – Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Board Member responsibilities include governance and fundraising roles as follows.
Leadership, Governance and Oversight
Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as they develop and implement MEC's plans.
Approve MEC's annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
Represent MEC to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization by making strategic connections, funding requests, public presentations
Review outcomes and metrics created by MEC for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
Review agenda and supporting materials prior to the board and committee meetings
Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director
Assist the Executive Director and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting Board Members
Ensure MEC's commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflect the communities of the Mid-American region we serve
Partner with the Executive Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
Fundraising
Metropolitan Energy Center Board Members will consider the organization a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that MEC can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, MEC must have 100% of Board Members make an annual contribution. Members give what they can each year, whether $5, $50, or $500 or more. Board Members are also encouraged to peer-fundraise a minimum of $1,500/year. Other fundraising obligations:
In collaboration with the Executive Director and other Board members, set organizational fundraising goals that are in line with the strategic plan.
Serve on or lead fundraising and event planning committees to drive staff and board fundraising performance.
Provide strategic vision to the Executive Director and other Board members pertaining to donor prospects and foundation giving.
Lead the peer-fundraising program, providing guidance for fellow board members in their fundraising endeavors.
Partner with the Executive Director to ensure fundraising obligations are fulfilled.
