DREAMS KC Board members partner with the Founder & Executive Director to set strategic direction, ensure fiduciary oversight, and build the relationships that sustain our literacy mission. The board holds DREAMS KC accountable to its mission, to the families we serve, and to the stewardship of its resources.
Each board member is expected to:
Understand DREAMS KC’s mission, programs, and financial statements
Attend and actively participate in at least 10 of 12 monthly board meetings
Serve on at least one standing committee and attend at least 90% of its meetings
Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance
Make a personally meaningful annual financial contribution
Manage at least three external relationships on DREAMS KC’s behalf
Act as an active advocate and ambassador in your professional and community networks
Attend at least one DREAMS KC special event per year
Commit approximately 3–5 hours per month for board and committee work, in addition to monthly meetings
Governance expectations include:
Following DREAMS KC’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
Signing an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and disclosing conflicts as they arise
Maintaining confidentiality on internal organizational matters
Leveraging your personal and professional connections to advance the mission
Board service with DREAMS KC is a partnership — not a title. We expect our board members to show up, speak up, open doors, and hold the organization and each other accountable to the work.
